At his Houston plastic surgery practice, Dr. Sam Sukkar says in order to achieve the best results from cosmetic enhancements, patients need to carefully and thoroughly research their plastic surgeon and the type of procedure that is right for them. Whether it be a procedure such as mommy makeovers or breast augmentation, Dr. Sukkar says by paying attention to specific details such as board certification, both patients and their doctors can attain a positive plastic surgery experience and a satisfactory outcome.
According to the latest statistics from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), demand for plastic surgery has risen 9% since 2009, while a related survey also showed by ASAPS reports that 51% of American now approve of cosmetic enhancement. Houston plastic surgeon, Dr. Sam Sukkar, says that as cosmetic surgery continues to grow in popularity and demand, patients should take extra care to ensure they are receiving the best treatment from a board-certified plastic surgeon. Due to a surge in revenue and a lack of regulations for plastic surgery, he says cosmetic enhancement patients have fallen victim to a number of imposters practicing surgical procedures without the proper experience and training. Dr. Sukkar encourages patients to take the time to observe the details about their plastic surgeon’s credentials, qualifications, and dedication to quality results before undergoing any procedure.
In addition to board-certification, Dr. Sukkar says he recommends seeking a plastic surgeon who operates in an accredited and certified surgical facility with the privileges to perform the same procedure in a local hospital. He says this additional qualification verifies the presence of a staff of trained personnel, adequate equipment, and precautionary emergency preparation. Dr. Sukkar also says to check up on a plastic surgeon’s access to board-certified anesthesiologists and Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist providers to ensure safe sedation from a highly skilled team.
“It is important to feel comfortable with your plastic surgeon, and referrals based on friends and family is a good place to start. A good plastic surgeon should be passionate about what they do and up to date with new technologies available that have been properly proven to enhance results. Beware of plastic surgery practices that approach your care in a assembly line fashion as they usually do not focus on the small details. Technology and result-driven practices invest in equipment to optimize patient education and results. An attractive website with adequate photos for you to evaluate will give you an idea of the artistic eye of the surgeon. The technical aspects of surgery can be taught, but may times you cannot teach artistry or an appreciation of aesthetics.”
Whether patients are seeking a tummy tuck or another cosmetic procedure, Dr. Sukkar says finding a practice that is dedicated to your safety and satisfaction is of the utmost importance. He says both patient and plastic surgeon alike should be passionate about every detail in order to achieve the highest quality results and a positive surgical experience. “First time plastic surgery patients may feel intimidated when entering a practice for a consultation. Plastic surgeons with a confident, yet approachable demeanor should be able to put their patients at ease.”
