About Back Liposuction

Stubborn pockets of fat beneath your skin, also known as subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT), are difficult to eliminate with diet and exercise as you age. Back fat can develop as a result of genetics, weight changes, pregnancy, diet, or lifestyle factors. It can cause bra rolls that chafe uncomfortably or change the way your clothing fits. We can remove the fat by performing several types of liposuction with different tools and techniques based on your personal goals:

  • Tumescent Liposuction: We use a thin cannula to remove excess fat with tumescent fluid– a combination of epinephrine, saline, and lidocaine that reduces bleeding and causes your fat cells to swell for smooth removal.
  • VASER Liposuction: Vibration Amplification of Sound Energy at Resonance (VASER) lipo emulsifies your fat with ultrasonic energy; the bubbles created in the tumescent fluid dislodge your fat cells and we remove them with gentle suction.
  • Vaser High Def: We can emulsify your fat with another type of ultrasound-assisted liposuction (UAL) – Vaser Hi Def– to sculpt your body and enhance your muscle definition. We can help you achieve “six-pack abs” and a more athletic body with the procedure.
  • PowerX: With a rotating cannula, we can tone and define your body for a slimmer, more athletic physique. The cannula allows us to remove fat at different angles for more effective fat reduction.
  • SmartLipo™: With laser lipolysis, we can stimulate collagen production with laser energy and heat to tighten your skin and liquefy excess fat cells before removing them with gentle suction. Sagging skin is a common issue after weight changes, and SmartLipo™ can help with mild skin laxity.

  • Balanced Body Proportions: We can enhance your body proportions with back liposuction for a slimmer, curvier physique.
  • Fast Recovery: Liposuction requires minimal downtime for a smoother recovery.

Candidates

The best candidates for back liposuction are healthy, nonsmokers who are within 30% of their ideal weight but are unable to eliminate stubborn pockets of back fat. If you have an underlying condition such as diabetes, heart disease, or immune disorders that could affect your ability to heal, you may not be the best candidate for the procedure. Patients who smoke, have asthma, or have high blood pressure may not be suitable candidates. (3) It is important to have realistic expectations about what you can achieve with the procedure. Liposuction is not a weight loss treatment. We also cannot access visceral adipose tissue (VAT)– a type of fat that is deep within the abdominal wall. (4) We can, however, use liposuction to remove the fat beneath your skin for a more athletic body.

Consultation

During your consultation, Dr. Sukkar or Dr. Bedolla will examine the treatment area to determine the best type of liposuction to perform based on your aesthetic goals. Please come prepared to discuss your medical history and lifestyle. It is also important to have accurate expectations about what we can achieve with the procedure and whether or not you will need additional treatments to meet your body goals. If you would like to remove fat from other areas of your body, we can discuss liposuction for your armsthighs, and abdomen during your consultation. We will also discuss your body goals to determine whether VASERVaser High DefPowerX, or SmartLipo™ is best for you.

Preparation

Before a back liposuction appointment, you will need to take several steps to prepare:

  • Stop smoking 2 weeks before your procedure.
  • Refrain from drinking alcohol 1-2 weeks prior to your appointment.
  • Stop taking blood thinners and anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
  • Arrange for someone you trust to drive you home after the procedure.
  • Stay hydrated and get adequate rest.
  • Pick up prescriptions.
  • Make your meals ahead of time.
  • Clean your home and prepare an area to recover comfortably.

Before you arrive for your appointment, you will need to shower. You must use antibacterial soap and refrain from applying any lotion or perfume. You should arrive at the office with clean skin in clothes that are comfortable and easy to remove for the procedure.

Procedure

We will begin by administering anesthesia and cleansing your skin. Dr. Sukkar and Dr. Bedolla will mark the treatment area for surgery and make a small incision in a discrete location to inject tumescent fluid beneath your skin. The tumescent fluid will cause the fat cells to swell for easy removal, and your surgeon will use a thin, hollow cannula to gently remove the fat cells.

Dr. Sukkar or Dr. Bedolla will perform VASERVaser High DefPowerX, or SmartLipo™ depending on the body goals you discussed during your consultation. They take care to use gentle suction to remove fatty deposits while preserving the surrounding tissue. After your surgeon removes the fat, they will close the incisions with sutures and apply a compression garment to support your body during your recovery.

Back Liposuction Recovery

Recovery from liposuction takes approximately two weeks, depending on the amount of excess fat your surgeon removes. After the procedure, you may experience some temporary swelling, bruising, or redness in the treatment area.

Dr. Sukkar or Dr. Bedolla can prescribe medication to help you recover comfortably. You will need to avoid strenuous exercise and activity for approximately one month. Most patients are able to return to work after 2 weeks, depending on the amount of excess fat they had removed. After your procedure, we will provide specific instructions for your recovery based on the type of liposuction you have.

Results

Although you will see results immediately, you can enjoy the full effects of the treatment after a few weeks. Since liposuction permanently removes excess fat cells, the results can last several years with a healthy diet and consistent exercise. To maintain your results, you must lead a healthy lifestyle which includes eating a well-rounded diet, exercising regularly, and staying hydrated.

Corresponding Procedures

Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation improves the appearance of your breasts by increasing their size with implants. If your breasts have started to droop from aging, we can perform a breast augmentation lift to remove excess skin and lift their position. Some patients also choose to combine breast augmentation procedures with arm liposuction to remove excess fat from the upper arms which causes what is colloquially known as “bat wings.” The result is a slimmer, more toned upper body.

Thigh Lift

thigh lift eliminates excess skin on the thighs for slimmer, smoother legs and a more athletic appearance. After weight changes, your skin can become stretched or loose. During a thigh lift, we can make a discrete incision hidden in the groin to lift the skin and remove excess tissue for a younger appearance. During a thigh lift, we can also perform thigh liposuction to remove excess fat and improve the contour of your legs.

Tummy Tuck

tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) removes excess abdominal skin. Stretched, droopy skin is common after weight changes or pregnancy. During a tummy tuck, your surgeon will make an incision along your underwear line to remove excess tissue for a smoother abdomen. Many patients decide to combine a tummy tuck with abdominal liposuction to achieve a slimmer, more athletic midsection.
